Mental is a UK feature film set in Tottenham during the riots, in the charged aftermath of 9/11 and 7/7. As the city fractures outside, the film focuses on a single household — a squat on the dark fringes of society — where pressure, ideology, and survival collide.
Structured as a tightly contained four-hander, the film is led by Mental: a young man shaped by institutions, violence, and an instinct to keep the peace until peace is no longer possible. Around him orbit a disabled academic, a savant who rules the house, and a young woman radically out of place — each carrying their own version of the world that is breaking outside.
Non-naturalistic in form, Mental uses heightened language and extended speeches to interrogate power, belonging, and what remains of humanity when systems fail.
